Diamond Princess Grand Japan with Fall Foliage Preamble

We booked this cruise shortly after my brother passed away, and in doing so, we are honouring a journey he had always wished to share with us. Years ago, we had plans to sail around Japan with Celebrity Cruises; we made the booking, which was then cancelled three times during the pandemic. This caused us to lose our enthusiasm and then abandon the itinerary altogether. Then in 2024, just before his diagnosis, my brother asked, “If you ever go back to Japan on a cruise, can I come with you?” Though he never got that chance, we are taking this journey now as a tribute to his wish.

There are a few repeat ports from our Costa Serena cruise in 2025, but also many new ones.

The cabin selection was easy. After enjoying the Reserve Class on the Crown Princess around Australia, it was a simple decision to follow suit and book that cabin class again.

To start this adventure, we’re flying out to Tokyo three days early; our intention is to do plenty of exploring in and around the city after really enjoying our first visit last year. Japan as a whole was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and Tokyo is so vast that a day was nowhere near long enough, so we made the easy decision to spend a few days there to see more.

Before I wrap up this preamble, I want to give you a heads-up about post frequency. My rule has always been that if blogging starts to compromise the holiday experience, it’s time to adapt, and that’s felt a bit too true on recent cruises. So, going forward, I’ll still be taking plenty of notes and capturing lots of photos as I go, but rather than maintaining a daily upload schedule, I’m trying out a more relaxed approach. I’ll write and share posts as time permits during the trip or, if needed, in the worst-case scenario, put everything together comfortably from my PC once I’m back home. I hope it doesn’t come to that, but it’s only fair to warn you.

I wanted to give you a heads-up so you don’t worry if things go quiet for a few days! Thanks, as always, for following along, and I look forward to sharing this next journey with you, be it live, in retrospect or somewhere in the middle.

  1. I look forward to following your experiences around Japan. We would love to revisit, but the long flights are less appealing these days.
