Announcing Norwegian Spirit 26 November – 6 December 2014

We booked this cruise after having to cancel a one night from Rotterdam on the new Norwegian Getaway. NCL very nicely allowed us to use the money already paid as a deposit for this cruise. I had to make the selection by the end of the day and was initially at a complete loss at what/where to choose. After some consideration I picked an 8-day Canary Islands & Morocco From Barcelona on the Norwegian Spirit. We have also received $150 OBC and pre paid gratuities so thanks NCL

The Norwegian Spirit will be the 2nd oldest ship we have sailed on and also the smallest weighing in at 75,388 GT.  With the exception of our departure port, all the destinations will new to us while we have been cruising. I have been to Tenerife before but not since 1985!

We have yet to decide about flights and whether to fly out early but as its not for a long while yet there is no hurry to do so.

Advance Passenger Information for our cancelled cruise.

You have to laugh….. I received this e-mail earlier today from Ideal Cruising!  [customerservices@idealcruising.com]. Note the e-mail address!

Dear Sir / Madam,

This is a courtesy reminder regarding your advanced passenger information for your forthcoming cruise holiday:-

If you have not yet completed the  (API) and/or Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) for your party travelling on your forthcoming booking, please log on to your cruise lines website (and airline if applicable) and action this as soon as possible. You will need your passport and holiday insurance details to hand.

As part of on-going security measures, it is a legal requirement that all passengers travelling abroad provide their Advance Passenger Information (APIS) or Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) before your UK departure. If you have already actioned this, thank you and please ignore this courtesy reminder.

Tickets are issued 7-10 days prior to your UK departure.

Announcing Costa Fortuna 28 March – 15 April – Dubai to Savona

I had been keeping an eye on this cruise for some time but was unable to book it due to various circumstances going on within the family. I was really taken by the itinerary and even more by the price so when the opportunity to be able to book it eventually materialised then I didn’t hesitate to make the booking.
The booking has been made with Cruise Club UK and it is the third time we have used them. Much to my surprise the deposit was only £100 each which was a welcome bonus especially after loosing as much as we did after cancelling the Celebrity Eclipse cruise in December.

It is a Costa package and includes all air fares and transfers and fortunately we have been allocated direct flights at each end of the cruise, going out to Dubai will be on Emirates and coming back from Milan will be with BA.

There will be 8 new ports for us in amongst the 8 sea days. It all promises to be a fantastic experience and one that we are truly looking forward to.

Costa_Fortuna_Itinerary

Our cabin is on deck 6 and is right in the middle. It will be a lovely location and being as there are rear stairs and lifts means we will not have to traverse half the ship in order to get anywhere.
As it is our 5th Costa cruise it will be the first time for us as Pearl members of the Costa club. One of the benefits being able to have a free dinner in their speciality restaurant.

Pre Cruise Accommodation – Hotel San Giorgio – Civitavecchia

After much research into hotels in Civitavecchia I have selected the Hotel San Giorgio  as our Celebrity Reflection pre cruise hotel.  All the hotel reviews I read seemed to have at least one person grumbling about something or other and you have to try and read between the lines when hearing what others have had to say about their own experience.
There were enough good comments to make me think this one is the one and so I duly made the booking. At the time of writing this, Tripadivser has it ranked #4 out of the 9 hotels listed in Civitavecchia with 237 reviews most of which were positive.

Announcing Celebrity Reflection 4 – 15 August 2014

We have a cruise to look forward to at last. Following the disappointment of having to cancel our cruise on the Celebrity Eclipse I have today booked a cruise on one of her sister ships, the Celebrity Reflection. It is an Eastern Mediterranean itinerary which starts and finishes in Civitavecchia and has an over-night stop in Istanbul mid cruise.

We have again used an agent from the USA , not because it was any cheaper but because the promotions being offered on the other side of the Atlantic were much more favourable than the ones being offered by UK agents. We also love the fact the deposits are refundable up until final payment in the USA and given we have just lost £1000 on deposits here did sway the decision.

This cruise is perceived as being a holiday rather than an adventure and there currently no plans to go off and do lots of sightseeing. We will probably make the most of the ship and its facilities along with what should be some fantastic weather.

Celebrity-Reflection-Itinerary-2014

Our cabin (7268)  is on deck 7 and is located on the starboard hump and is exactly the same cabin number we had booked on the Eclipse. This is becoming a favoured location for us as our last cruise on the Silhouette was also in the same location.

The cruise that really wasn’t meant to be….

When you book a cruise so far in advance you always take the chance that nothing will happen in between when you book and before you leave and everything will go the way it was intended to go. Well after a series of varied circumstances we have today eventually decided to cancel the cruise.

You could say this cruise was doomed from day one when the travel agent with whom we made the booking with (Ideal Cruises) was suddenly sold without notice on the 13 July 2012, the lady at the travel agents that we had built up a fantastic relationship was made redundant and we were left without a direct point of contact. In the ensuing weeks the company now dealing with the booking became increasing difficult to liaise with which was all very frustrating and unnecessary.

In a statement received via e-mail, I was informed that Lowcost Holidays were taking over the booking and everything would continue as planned with the balance payment now being made to them.  OK, no problem with that set up until we needed to adjust the booking because one of our party were no longer cruising with us. The plan was to drop one of the cabins and move the lone member of our party into one of the other cabins.

I was initially told that  lowcostholidays.com could not make any administrative changes to my booking and they recommended that I transfer the whole package directly to Celebrity who would be able to make the adjustments and after several letters and many phone calls I actually believed that this was what was going to happen. However at the last minute something happened behind the scenes and I was told that lowcostholidays.com would now be able to adjust it and the booking would remain with them. This was then swiftly dealt with but I did experience some difficulty getting a booking confirmation which laid out all the changes correctly.

The next thing that started to make us think perhaps its was not to be was when my father in law was diagnosed with terminal cancer, the early prognosis estimating he would sadly only be around for only 9 months and we straight away started to consider what would happen should we be away and things took a turn for the worse. Would we be able go away knowing he could be very ill at the time and leave the family without our support? I don’t think there is any way we would get the full enjoyment of the cruise knowing family back home were having to cope on their own during this trying time.

Then to add to all the above, a relationship breakup and all of a sudden we were now down to six.

The final straw came when another member of our party recently found out they are needing to go in for some surgery which would leave them laid up for many weeks. The timings all coincided with final payment dates and the cruise itself and so the final decision sort of made itself in the end.

The job of cancelling proved to be another ordeal and despite my best endeavours in contacting Lowcost Holidays to try and cancel everything, it became a fruitless exercise.  Nobody answered the phone number I had been supplied and I kept getting an automated response via e-mail say someone will respond in 72 hours. I had already e-mailed them some three weeks previous to adjust the booking when our party was reduced to six but I never received a response and even to this day I still haven’t!

In an attempt to move things along I contacted Celebrity Cruises directly who eventually managed to contact the Lowcost Holidays on my behalf, this finally resulted in a call from one of their agents and at long last I was able to speak with someone about cancelling the bookings. However one final obstacle had to overcome, I needed to obtain written consent from the lead name in each cabin to say that I had authorisation to cancel everything even though they had nothing to do with the original booking process.

As a small consolation I  received this message by e-mail which to me was all too late.

“I understand that you had difficulties in reaching us to discuss your bookings with a member of our Customer Services team. I do apologise for this and can confirm this matter is being looked into by our Group Operations Director to understand what happened and where this issue occurred and to ensure this does not happen again. Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention as this will enable us to rectify the course. As as gesture of our goodwill and thanks in this matter, I have raised a holiday voucher for £20.00 which will follow shortly.”

So was this was the cruise that really wasn’t meant to be……..

Celebrity Silhouette Postcard #13 Venice & Disembarking

A short post this morning before we disembark for the journey home. Having said good bye to our waiters last night we made our way up to deck 14 for one final stroll round the top of the ship.

image

Lots of activity this morning with fork lifts flying all over the place busy unloading all the cases. It is a much more hectic scene than that of yesterday. We need to be in the theatre at 9:30 for our disembarking and if all goes to plan we will have a taxi waiting at 10:00 to take us to the airport for the flight home via Brussels.

Celebrity Silhouette Postcard #12 Venice (the return)

Having sailed in and out of Venice on two previous occasions we had a good idea of what to expect and see. What we didn’t anticipate was the delay of about an hour to allow the Royal Princess to come out and give us a enough room to go in.

The sail into Venice has to be one of the cruising worlds best and despite having already got 2 sets of photos already it is still impossible to resist not to taking any more.

Venice Cruise Terminal

Arrival at the terminal was due to be at 10:00am and we eventually arrived at 11:00 with apologies from the Captain. We are not disembarking today and will overnight in Venice and then get off tomorrow morning. Having been here twice and also spending a night here prior to the cruise we decided to stay on board and enjoy the ships facilities for one last day. What would we do if we went ashore? Answer; nothing we hadn’t already seen and done. In two days time we will be back at work so the eventual decision made the most sense to us.

Virtually deserted ship around lunch time

After an exhausting morning sitting by the pool we forced ourselves to go and have some lunch where again the buffet was deserted.  I have no idea who they were expecting to eat all the food, perhaps my reputation proceeds me?

We sat out on the open terrace area and enjoyed the views over the lagoon while eating our last lunch on the ship. The rest of the afternoon was spend back beside the pool getting in and out of it every 20 minutes or so to cool off.

It just remains now to pack and go to dinner and have our cases out before 11:00. Its always the worst time on any cruise and it doesn’t get any easier.

Celebrity Silhouette Postcard #11 Split, Croatia

Split was our last port before returning to Venice and once again we were using the lifeboats as tenders. We had nothing major planned other than going ashore for a stroll and to see what was there. We caught the tender at 10:10 and headed for the shore, just after we left the ship we heard over the radio that we had 92 passengers onboard. Very surprising as it didn’t seem as many as that at all.
The trip took around 15 minutes and I was again surprised at how well the lifeboats handled and how fast they went plus they even have air conditioning! There was also the option to sit up top which we did on the way back. Here are a couple of photos of the interior while on our way to Split.

image

image

Once ashore we headed towards the medieval old town of Split. Croatia is still using the Kuna and many of the shops and stores here would only take it as currency. We decided only to exchange some if we saw anything that was a must do or buy. You don’t really want to end up with loads of foreign currency which is going to be obsolete if you can help it. Sadly for the local traders we took everything back to the ship with us.

As a matter of interest the main excursion that the ship was selling was to the Krka National Park.

image

image

image

image

image

Not unlike Dubrovnik or Kotor, Split has an area which is just loads of narrow passage ways and gift shops and bars and after about an hour and a half I am sorry to say that we decided that we had seen enough of this sort of thing on this cruise. We managed to find a few items that were of interest and had this been the first port with this kind of layout then it may have held more in interest.

image

image

image

For the trip back to the ship we used lifeboat number 12 and sat up top which provided a welcome breeze.

image

image

I don’t want to put Split down but this was one walled medieval town too many for us. It is at the end of a cruise and we are just now wanting to enjoy the weather and the ships facilities so like many others we returned to the ship and sat by the pool and soaked up the sun.  Would I get off here again? Ask me again if I ever come back as of right now the answer would probably be no.

image

image

Next stop our sail into Venice and we will be able to see it all from our balcony. We might even push the boat out and enjoy our breakfast while doing so.

Celebrity Silhouette Postcard #10 Kotor, Montenegro

We were up early this morning for the sail into the natural harbour where Kotor lies. Absolutely stunning views for the passage which started at 6:00 and ended with us anchoring at just before 7:45. The echo of the sound of anchor being dropped seemed to go for miles and we wondered what it was to start with.
I must have taken well over 100 photos just on the way in so the problem I have is being able to select some of the best to upload here. It really is a beautiful sail in to Kotor and I am glad we got up earlier than usual to see it.

image

image

image

Early tendering was by a numbering system and once the rush had died down it reverted to an open system. We ate breakfast and when everything seemed to have calmed we made our way to the theatre to get our tender tickets which were numbered 28 and we must have timed it just right as we had very little time to wait and were soon making our way to the shore.

image

image

image

Upon arrival we followed the rest of the passengers to the gates of the old fortified town of Kotor where we passed through the gates into the picturesque town behind.

image

image

image

image

image

Mass was just ending in the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas and the choir were still in full swing when we arrived, it sounded amazing and I heard a guide telling his flock that this choir was one of the oldest in the area.

We spent the next couple of hours wandering round and exploring the narrow passage ways and alleys, stopping briefly for some local beer and a coffee.

Today it has been very hot and not ideal for wandering or touring and so when we had seen enough to satisfy our needs we made our way back to the ship and headed straight for the pool to cool off.

image

image

image

Back on the ship and in the cabin we looked at Celebrity Navigation Channel to see that the temperature was 37C/99F today and with no breeze it felt even hotter. It was too much for me and so we came back to the cabin where I could stay in the air conditioned cabin and Nicole could sit on our balcony and enjoy the sun but after a while it was even too hot for her and she too came in.

Tonight is the third and final formal night and we will be putting our glad rags on for the last time this cruise. Our waiter Apong, has told us that lobster will be on the menu tonight so I know what I will be having.
